Biography: Sam got a job in 1997 as a flash developer / designer “Because Flash is basically the same as Director, right?”. Since then he has worked at BBC, DeepEnd Design, and then Lateral which was his home for almost seven years. As lead designer at Lateral Sam was part of a team that won many awards on such clients as Levi’s, Stella Artois and Sega.
After Lateral, Sam did a stint as Head of Design at PartyGaming and then went on to be lead designer at InboxDigital. At Party Sam learnt about affiliate marketing and gaming – at Inbox Sam was again part of an award winning team delivering some of the best viral games out there for big brands.
In 2006 Sam set up Phenotype, which has a rather different approach to most agencies, which only now is becoming popular. Phenotype has a network of small specialists that work on things such as eCommerce or digitalComs. Alongside its core design and build skills Phenotype puts together dream teams of specialists for specific projects. This allows it to punch far above its weight in terms of clients, Again looking towards bigger brands and white labelled to other agencies, Phenotype aims to create digital ‘things’ using specialist teams for an honest price.
