Some newly introduced laws make downloading, as well as uploading, content an illegal offence in Japan, punishable by a prison term and a large fine. People who download content from the internet without authorisation can now face two years in prison or a fine of up to $25,700, under new sentencing implemented in Japan last Monday. The new regulations were passed in June, when the offence became criminal rather than civil offence.
